Hello,I posted this in another thread and it was recommended that I start a new thread for this question. So here it is.I just got a RT311 and I found out that the firmware is an old version, 2.30. So, I thought I might update it to 3.20+. I went to Netgear's website and downloaded the new 3.22 version. In the zip file was a pdf file that described what I needed to do. It describes a way to do the upgrade using Windows and the DOS ftp program that comes by default.

Seems simple enough. However, then at the end it says that you can use FTP for versions 2.50 and above, but for older version see the reference manual.

Well, apparently mine never came with that manual because all I have is the Install Guide. This is new to me and I don't want to mess anything up. Can someone explain to me in easy terms how to update the firmware for my RT311? Do I need to use the serial connection? If so, do I have to install the CD software package that came with the router? I would appreciate any help you can provide.Thank you.Edit:I found the Reference Guide on the CD. I thought they meant a printed guide of some kind. I'll read that over and post back.Later Edit:Ok, I read some of the guide and it says to use the serial connection.

It says that I need to use the XMODEM protocols of my serial connection software. But what do they mean by that? They don't explain what protocols to use or how?

The next thing they say is to type in 'atgo' to restart the router. Someone please explain this to me, because I am lost.text was edited by author 2001-01-02 23:15:03text was edited by author 2001-01-03 00:17:15.

Port

I connected the included serial cable that came with the router to the router and the open com port on the computer. Since my 56k modem is using com 2, I assumed that this would be com 1.When I go into Hyper Terminal (by Hilgraeve; this is what came with WIN98), I seem to setup everything correctly. It says connected at the bottom left of the screen and starts counting away. However, that's it. There is just a blinking cursor up top. One site I visited said there would be 'C^' repeating across the terminal screen, but I don't see this. Did I do something wrong?

Is there some step I might have skipped?Any ideas? Hyperterminal, or what ever client you use to access the serial port, needs to be configured the same as the serial port of the router. The default at the router is 9600,n,8,1. You can up the speed at the router through the configuration menu so the transfer goes faster. But if you have not changed any settings you will need to set hyperterminal to the 9600,n,8,1 otherwise when you connect with the router it won't display properly.I only use serial to update firmware and configure the router. I find its easier, once you get the hang of it, and you can access more options than web settings.I have my serial port at 115K instead of 96k and its fast.

Tech support does not recommend 115K though. They prefer slower speeds. With Hyperterminal you can save a file that automatically connects to the router. Its quite convienient.Jim.

Uploading Software and Restoring Defaults to RT311/RT314 RoutersInstallation OverviewThe software (firmware) of the Netgear RT311/RT314 Internet Gateway Router is stored in internal rewritable FLASH memory and can be updated in the field by the user with no special software or tools other than a terminal emulation program such as HyperTerminal, ProComm, etc. Upgrading involves downloading one binary file that contains the routing software components. Note that the upgrade cannot be performed from the FirstGear Configuration Utility.

Restoring the firmware is a 2-step process – 1) Updating the Firmware, 2) Running “Romfile0”. BOTH MUST BE DONE to complete the firmware upgrade properly. The Romfile0 step must be done last. The instructions are also included on this sheet. The router firmware needs to be upgraded with a serial connection to the Manager port on the rear of the router. Using the serial port, the upgrade procedure consists of putting the router into boot mode, and then sending it the new software image using a terminal emulation program that supports an XMODEM transfer of a binary file. Even though there are other instructions on how to update the firmware via FTP, we get to may complaints that the FTP method does not always work. The method outlined here has proven to have a much higher rate of success.Procedure for upgrading software by a serial connectionWARNING: If you can access the setup menu of your existing firmware, you may want to copy your existing settings or print the screens so you can easily setup the new firmware after it is installed.

YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR CUSTOM SETTINGS during this update procedure. All settings will revert back to the factory default settings.1.Temporarily connect a serial cable between the RT311 or RT314 and your computer. If something else is connected to the serial port on the computer, just disconnect it temporarily while you are updating this router.

(Note: Firmware upgrades should only be done through HyperTerminal WITH the serial cable. You cannot upgrade firmware through Telnet.) Even though an update can be done via FTP (in theory), we get a lot of complaints from users that report of unsuccessful firmware updates using FTP.

Because of this, we “highly recommend” the HyperTerminal method instead. It seems to be a much more dependable way of getting the job done.2.Start the HyperTerminal program, usually located in START/Programs/Accessories, or Accessories/Communications. When you start it, it will prompt you for a name. Enter anything, or enter RT311. Click OK.3.In the “Phone Number” window, go to the bottom field “Connect using” and change setting to “Direct to Com 1” or COM 1 (or whichever applies to your PC). Then click OK.4.In the COM1 Properties window, (some computers might be set up for COM2 or COM3), click on the “Restore Defaults” button. The should read as follows:Bits per seconds: 9600Data bits: 8Parity: NoneStop bits: 1Flow Control: NoneIf the above settings do not equal those listed above, adjust the settings until they do.

Then click OK.By the way, you can select a faster speed then 9600 bits per second. Some people report some problems when they select too fast of speed. That is why I usually leave it at the default of 9600 bits per second, since it seems to work for everybody. But feel free to try a faster speed to speed up the process. Just keep in mind that if you run into problems, then you will want to try it again at a slower, more dependable speed.

Some systems handle faster speeds better than others.5.Now you should be in the HyperTerminal window, with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. Unplug the power cord in the back of the RT311 router for at least 5 seconds, then plug back in. Watch the HyperTerminal screen.

It should appear that the RT311 is booting up. When the statement pops up that says, “Press Any key to enter Debug Mode within 3 seconds”, then press any key.Example (as system is booting):Boot Module Version: P42D. Built at Tue Apr 14 19:Testing & Clearing DRAM.Press Any key to enter Debug Mode within 3 seconds.6.Before proceeding further, if you are updating to a newer firmware version, be sure you have previously downloaded and expanded the file into a new folder from the Netgear web site. We cannot use the compressed.zip file that was downloaded. It needs to be “expanded” into a new empty folder BEFORE we can proceed further.

The two files that will expand out of this.zip file will be ‘romfile0’ and ‘rt311v.’ (whatever version it is). Once you have accomplished this, then you can proceed with step 7.7.Type in: atur, then press ENTER.

You should see a string of letters, such as: CCCCCCCC going across the screen continuously. When you see this happening, go to next step.8.Along the top of the HyperTerminal window is a drop-down menu that says, “Transfer”. Click on the Transfer menu, then select “Send File.”. Change the Protocol to XMODEM. Then click on the “Browse” button and select the firmware file (for example: rt311.), one of the two files you previously downloaded. Select it, then click ‘Open’, then click ‘Send’ in the “Send File” Window. An install progression bar will appear showing the progress of the installation.

When it is completed, you will see:Programming successful.OK9.Now type: atgo then press ENTER. Watch the HyperTerminal screen. It should appear that the router is booting up.

This time, DO NOT hit any key within 3 seconds, let it boot up all the way. Then you will see the RT311 Setup Menu. Now you can set up the router. We are finished with the serial cable too, so now you can remove it from the router and PC.
